GARY KNIGHT: The Complete Photojournalist
Orientation Sunday, May 6, 4:30pm – 5:30pm
Monday, May 7th – Wednesday, May 9th 9:00am – 4:00pm.
Thursday, May 10th 9:00am – 11:00am (Optional)
VII Photo Agency co-founder and multiple award winning photojournalist Gary Knight will conduct a special workshop using both observed and constructed portraiture, and interview. Knight is very involved in giving agency to the people photographed by photojournalists. He has been working on portraits of people with stories to tell, and using very long interviews (sometimes 2 or 3 hours long) with them so they can narrate the story that accompanies their portraits. Today photojournalists must bring home more than photography if they want to tell the stories of the people affected by the conflicts they cover. Video, interviews and still photographs are now required to tell stories in our digital online world.
In this workshop, photographers will photograph and interview people, the result being a comprehensive portrait giving that person’s story a fuller and more intensive examination than the photographic portrait alone.
Gary Knight will present his recent work, and help to provide guidance for the members of the class as they prepare, produce and complete their portraits. Gary is the principle architect and Director of the VII Photo Agency and Director of the VII Foundation. He has successfully funded a number of projects which you can see on the VII Agency and websites. He is happy to discuss any area of the contemporary photography business he can help you with.
